A Pilgrimage When the Heather is in Bloom

There are moments in the year when the North York Moors seem to stop us in our tracks.
August is one of them.
For a few precious weeks, the moorland bursts into colour as the heather comes into bloom. Hillsides that have seemed quiet and green through spring and early summer are suddenly transformed into a rich tapestry of purple stretching to the horizon. It is one of the defining sights of the North York Moors, and one that has inspired walkers, artists and pilgrims for generations.
On Wednesday 12 August, we're inviting you to experience it for yourself on our Glorious Twelfth Guided Pilgrimage.
This isn't simply a walk. It is a day to slow down, to notice, and to journey together through one of the most beautiful landscapes in England.

Beginning at All Saints Church, Old Byland, we'll set out after a short reflection, following part of the Saint Aelred's Pilgrim Trail through woodland, river valleys and open moorland.
There will be time to pause over coffee and homemade cake at Murton Grange, with magnificent views across the moors, before continuing to the peaceful riverside church of All Saints, Hawnby. From there, we'll climb onto the moor itself, where we'll enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by flowering heather and the vast skies of the National Park.

Our pilgrimage continues to the beautiful Church of St John, Bilsdale, where we'll gather for a final reflection before returning to Old Byland for tea, cake and conversation.
One of the loveliest comments we received after our May pilgrimage was this:
"Pilgrimage provides the perfect opportunity to bond with people as conversation seems to flow more freely when combined with walking."
That simple observation captures something important. Pilgrimage isn't about rushing from one place to another. It's about allowing the rhythm of walking to open up space—for conversation, for silence, for noticing the beauty around us, and perhaps for discovering something unexpected within ourselves.
Whether you come with a strong faith, a questioning heart, or simply a love of walking in beautiful places, you'll be very welcome. The Saint Aelred's Pilgrim Trail was created to be a place of hospitality, where people of all faiths and none can share the journey together.

The walk is approximately 9 miles and is led by Joyce Garbutt, Mal Gyte and the Saint Aelred's Pilgrim Trail Pathfinder Team. Refreshments, lunch and afternoon tea are all included.
Places are limited to just 12 pilgrims. If you'd like to experience the North York Moors at their very best, we'd love you to join us. You can find full details and book your place on our Events page.
We look forward to welcoming you on the trail.
